Pirates of the Burning Sea or simply called PotBS were designed as a MMORPG or massively multiplayer online role-playing game is crafted by FLS (Flying Lab Software). The game is set a little bit retrospective in the Caribbean in the year 1720. Player-fueled economy, swashbuckling as well as tactical ships were the crucial elements of this game.

In the beginning of the game, players will have to designate a Career for themselves represented by the avatars. The player will play the role of the ship’s captain and the predetermined Career will further determine the kind of features and abilities the captain can accumulate. There is a corresponding one point for the player’s career avatar for every level tackled. Depending on the chosen career of the player, the points accumulated can be spent in numerous ways. The career is unchangeable once chosen. Every Career is loaded with 45 skills. The skills represented by skill trees comprise 9 skill chains which in turn is 5 skills deep. Rank 15 is the required skill for the player to be considered equal to Rank 50 at the end of that specific skill chain.

There were three careers assigned for the British, French and Spanish nationals. These are the:

Naval Officer – assigned to oversee the overall defense and escorting roles, direct as well as side-to-side combat. Only Naval officers have the ability to gain access to the line’s powerful ships.

Privateer – they were the ones manning the advantageous smaller ships in outwitting and outmaneuvering enemies. Privateers were designed to have an advantage also in boarding combat and can be able to learn a certain type of skill that lets them use the Pirate PvP areas or zones.

Freetrader – as the name suggests, they play a major role in the economy and production. Evading enemies in combat is their special ability. They can also acquire skills that increase their resource-gathering and goods-production abilities.

The assigned Careers for pirates are as follows:

Cutthroat – defeated ships would automatically be put under the command of these careers. Automatic flagging for PvP awaits a pirate that defeated a class-specific ship.

Buccaneer – a career that is more advanced when it comes to skills.

There were three styles of fighting in the game namely Dirty fighting, which employs the use of a cutlass, Fencing that uses a rapier and Florentine, a fighting style that utilizes dagger as well as short sword. Of all the fighting styles, Florentine is considered to be the best in defensive tactics.

Other systems that make up the game were Port Contention, Private PvP Zone, Open PvP Zone, Contention, Port Battle and the Ships, which have 9 variations. The Stripped, Courier, heavy, Sleek, Mastercraft, Privateer, Pirate, Trader and Naval were all ship variants and all has different uses. There is also the ability of the players to have a group called Societies that can be compared to Guilds of other massive multiplayer online games. Aside from Societies, another system that can be manipulated by the player is the economy.
