Treyarch brought the world once again to its past, World War II. Call of Duty: World at War is the newest first-person game from Treyarch that enables us to relive the excitement of World War II through this game. The two main setting of this game is situated and chiefly concentrates on the battle that happened in the two crucial battlefields, The Pacific and in Eastern Europe, which has become the catch basin of the ensuing battle that involves the world’s super powers including the Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan forces, United States and Soviet Union. Many historical battle grounds were made as an actual basis for this game to give more realistic experience to the players. Included here in the plot were the battles of Berlin, Battle of Peleliu as well as the raid that happened in Makin Island.

The game has many exciting game modes, a co-op mode which is a new feature not included in the previous series and challenging leveling systems which holds many rewards like additional weapons to be unlocked and the. The new co-op mode can be able to support four online players in addition to the two offline players.

Call of Duty: World at War is more established or matured when compared to its predecessor as manifested by a more open-ended series of games because of its more ways in completing points or objectives. Regardless of the apparent improvements, many maneuvers were retained like team members can still provide cover fires and help each other in crushing down enemies as well as entry clearings.

At the start of the game, only a grenade and two other weapons were allowed to the player but as the game progresses they will have the chance to gain access to various other weapons such as Thompson submachine gun, Mosin-Nagant Rifle, the legendary anti-tank rocket Panzerschreck and Flamethrowers. In addition to this, the player is allowed to pick up weapons from a fallen enemy that can be used in replacing the arsenal of the player.

A simulation of the actual soldier’s movement which is kneeling, standing and prone position with its corresponding effect on the player’s stealth, accuracy and movement adds up to the stimulation. As can be seen in the actual environment, a soldier that takes cover can avoid direct enemy fire and the same is true when a player does the same on this game. Avoiding enemy fire is also the only way for a damaged player to recover for there is no powerups, nor armor in this game. Synchronized indicators, such as glowing lights on the screen’s edge that glow red when the player is hit as well as an increased heartbeat indicator. A grenade direction indicator is also present to warn the character of the direction and the blast radius of the grenade, making him aware of the presence of danger thus giving him a moment to react.

This new game also features a similar multiplayer experience from that of Call of Duty 4. Death match is included also in its six multiplayer modes as well as capturing the flag, among others.

There were two story modes that feature an additional two campaigns. The American campaign revolves around the character of Private Miller, a U.S. Marine Corpsman who was assigned to scout Makin Island and was taken into custody by Japanese forces and destined to be executed. The Russian counterpart mode had Private Dimitri Petrenko as its lead character while they try to battle it out with the more or less merciless Germans in the Battle of Stalingrad. As the story unfolds, the battle rages on.
